the fascinating life of copyright.
if you’re a facebook friend of mine and i mean me not the pink brutus version, then you may be friends with hubs and in turn know that there’s something really weird going on with his motorcycle involving a t-shirt. you may also know i’ve been griping about levi’s if you follow me on twitter or instagram. are you tired of the cryptic messages we’ve carved out for you? ok. sorry.
i’m not here to gripe. promise. i’m here to warn and celebrate.
let’s just get the warning part done and over with.
hubs has a motorcycle. it’s pretty famous as far as motorcycles go which is weird to me because we’re not famous but sometimes people think we are which is also weird. so, this motorcycle was built by our friends at ardcore… also the place hubs is the painter for… also where hubs designed these silly handle bar things that are called f-u bars or something like that and everyone went ga-ga over them. he designed them for his motorcycle… that weird famous one…. it’s been in some magazines and junk so that’s pretty cool.
the other morning a fellow he did work for sent him a text that jolted him out of bed. apparently a certain very world famous company (famous for jeans) has printed a picture of this famous motorcycle on some of their new t-shirts. this is a picture hubs took in our driveway maybe a summer or two ago. this is horrible and flattering simultaneously. there has been a huge uproar about this in the chopper motorcycle scene over the past week and people are getting super amped up! not us though. we know a patent attorney and he’s on board with getting this resolved for us. it’s not really a big deal though - we’re just really like… sick of being screwed.
here is the warning: i swear i thought people were nuts for water marking every stupid snap-shot and secretly thought they might have illusions of grandeur or something, but please - for the love of god - either make sure you have very clear watermarks or a very clear disclaimer on your website/blog about your photos and text being YOURS and that they are protected under your website’s/blog’s copyright. kay? please? because even though it’s really freaking cool that someone else might love your (what ever) that much it’s also pretty shitty to have it snatched out from under you. thanks! (you may notice a new addition to my own blog space….)
i’ve been really busy and getting these prints done makes the vision more in focus than ever. for years i felt like all the things i wanted to do were just out of reach and for some strange reason during all crap we’ve been wading through recently the inspiration and drive have joined forces to give me a leg up. it’s a very, very good thing. it’s a thing worth celebrating.
for those of you who don’t know this, i was a ceramist in another life. i was also a printmaker. these are lino block carvings - test prints for the final clean up. i’m so freaking close it’s palatable.
ewe kids… xo
